Program History
Since 1958 at the inception of the Nanaimo Region John Howard Society, public education has been an integral part of the Society operation. Educating the community and all levels of Government has played an important role and contributed to the Society’s success. Through public education, we aspire to foster understanding, compassion and support. In effect, public education is one of the Nanaimo Region John Howard Society’s core programs.
Types of Public Education
Presentations – Service groups, Chamber of Commerce, Community Agencies, City of Nanaimo, City of Duncan, Nanaimo Regional District, ICBC, School District 68, Businesses etc.
Annual Report – Distributed at the Annual General meeting, community meetings, to students entering the Criminal Justice field and Society volunteers.
Newspaper Articles – Current events and new programs keep the Nanaimo area residents informed of the work we are doing.
Brochures and informational cards – Distributed at community presentations, downtown businesses and in the display area at the Nanaimo Region John Howard Society office.
Community Forums – To educate the public on drug and alcohol misuse, mental illness, housing issues etc.
Membership with Other Organizations - Widens the net and allows us to take part in discussions on current issues, program development and fund raising.
Word of Mouth – From the Nanaimo Region John Howard Society, Board Members, volunteers, funding bodies and Society program recipients.
Web Page – Nanaimo Region John Howard Society and program information.
Without the support of the community, we would not be able to offer the high quality programming we currently do. Addressing current societal issues and encouraging program participants to work on positive change, can play a role in lowering the recidivism rate and promote a safer community.
