Program History
Since 1998, the Nanaimo Region John Howard Society has offered a Community Assistance Program to individuals who have had some criminal involvement, either historically or at present. The Response and Assistance Program (RAP) was created in May of 2007. The Program was initiated to address the immediate need of individuals who have been set back financially, mentally and or emotionally.
Program Purpose
The following are a variety of services RAP provides:
Finding safe, supportive and affordable housing
Discussions on money management
Discussions about life skills to help the reintegration process and lessen frustrations
Advocacy with other agencies to meet client needs
Assessing readiness of the client for education and employment opportunities
Assistance with correspondence and resumes
Referring to the appropriate agencies to further support
Assistance in alleviating any problem that may arise for the client
Ongoing support interviews
Pardon/Waiver Application Assistance
Individuals who have a criminal record have the option of applying for a pardon three to five years after the completion of sentence. Summary Convictions yield a three-year waiting period and an Indictable offence yield a five-year waiting period after the completion of sentence; this includes the payment of fines and restitution. Canadians with a criminal record will need a U.S waiver to cross the border.
